By the second grade, he was drawing freehand two-point perspectives and surrealistic, dreamlike structures while also experimenting with ink blots, wood sculptures, Polaroid image distortions and pinhole cameras. After classes at the renowned Cleveland Museum of Art and years of formal training in advanced darkroom techniques, Robiner became fascinated with experimental photography. Starting in the late 1980s, working professionally as a filmmaker and visual artist in Hollywood, Steven served as Visual Effects Supervisor on a number of major feature films and has numerous of awards for his cinematic efforts. After 16 years in that industry, he has returned to his passion, expression through personal artistic creations. Steven’s inspirations flow from the elusive twilight between lucid dreaming and awakened perception; “those transitory moments that offer a peek into the collective subconscious where the mesh of memories, nightmares, and a distorted expectation of reality merge.” ARTIST STATEMENT I remember, as a young child, finding a small piece of translucent mica in a forest behind my schoolyard and looking through it with amazement. The clouds rippled wild hues, the trees cracked into rainbows -- the whole world fractured into an abstract echo of reality. Ultimately, these fascinating distortions caused me to re-examine the real world much more carefully, initially for comparison, but later as an independent source of creative inspiration. Soon it was clear that pure nature is often just as intriguing. Though often overlooked, every part of our surroundings sing out with their own unusual, yet harmonious structures. The reverberating patterns, lyrical colors, and synchronistic textures cry out for reverence, far beyond their prima facie surface. When we awaken to a deeper sense our environment, we begin to feel the varied rhythms of life-forms and geo-forms resonating with a musical quality as complex layers of beauty blend with simple truths. We can choose to stand apart from the playful celebration of our fractal cousins -- a perspective that often makes what's real feel surreal -- or, realizing we are a part of the universe ourselves, we can play a part in this dance, intertwining within that harmony, and becoming an integral partner with nature again. © 2005-2017 Steven Robiner – All Rights Reserved
