STEVEN ROBINER – ARTIST STATEMENT
A few weeks after the tsunami of 2004, I was there, in the Andaman Sea, south of Krabi. Stepping onto this rare gem: a remote, uninhabited island. Granted that for many people the huge wall of water was tragic, yet in this place there was very little damage. Instead, this was a place of earthly resurrection and a revelation of magnificent secrets.
After exploring the area for a few minutes, I noticed strange trees and exotic boulders in the distance. I began moving beyond the ‘safety’ area of the arrival site, knowing that I had only a few hours before I had to catch the boat back to the ‘civilized’ world….
I walked alone for an hour, into the backside of the island, where the landscape was dramatically different. I realized this was the side where the strongest waves had hit, yet, here, the beauty of nature survived.
