Artist's Description
Driving by this area on a tropical island in Thailand, I was struck by this bizarre scene of tall, slim concrete pilings -- an abandoned construction site. This compellingly ironic and surreal site of "tombstones" marking a formerly forested area, now a desolate "graveyard" was fenced off to all but a lonely ox with nothing to do but mourn for the trees destroyed to make room for their own grave markers.
It was difficult to find the perfect spot from which to capture the three dimensional depth including all the important elements (palm-trees, tombstones, ox, barbed wire fence and a portion of the green world outside (in the lower left foreground), all while catching a most uncooperative ox with just the right sad look in his eye (being in Thailand; he didn't speak English).
